This Toshiba microwave is exactly what I needed! It’s compact enough to fit perfectly on my small kitchen counter but still powerful enough to heat food quickly and evenly. The 6 auto menus are super convenient , I use the popcorn and reheat settings all the time, and they work flawlessly.

The design looks sleek and modern with the black stainless finish, and the control panel is easy to read and use. It’s also surprisingly quiet compared to other small microwaves I’ve owned.

Whether I’m heating leftovers, defrosting meat, or making a quick snack, it handles everything without a problem. For its size, performance, and price, this is a fantastic little microwave. Highly recommend for apartments, dorms, or anyone short on counter space! 🍽️🔥

The black finish looks sleek and blends in nicely without standing out too much. Simple, reliable, and stylish—honestly couldn’t ask for more from a countertop microwave!

We received this microwave just yesterday and have used it to cook and reheat already; first impressions are great.
We saved a little money with the Prime sale, delivery was fast and the box was handled well with minor damage that did not affect the microwave.
The black stainless steel look is classy and fits the look of our other appliances, finally. Our old microwave should have been replaced at least a couple of years ago, but lasted us over 20 years; it was time.
The Sensor cooking option is really nice, so convenient and effective! The internal light actually allows me to see the food, imagine that.
So far, I am giving 5-stars, if anything changes I will change my rating.

Our other microwave was old and losing power and the handle broke. I especially like the handle of this machine because unless you push up on the handle it will not open. I feel it is a safety issue for us. It has a light inside and shows items cooking through the glass and a lot quieter than our old one. It was very important to me that the outside of the unit was no bigger than the old microwave because of where it was going to sit and I found this one that had the same measurements and I wanted a little higher wattage. I was suprised to find that the measurements inside are much larger, it feels like so much more room. It has auto cook buttons, and one that I have not tried yet is Sensor reheat and also custom cook. It came with a manual that showed all the parts of the microwave where they were and how to clean. I have defrosted meat several times now and the meat was not cooked as it defrosted. I really like this microwave.

This microwave is very intuitive to use. A few days before I purchased this Toshiba, I had purchased a Whirlpool model WMCS7022SZ that I had for 2 days. I could not figure out how to get it to cook for say 45 seconds, even after reading the manual. Accidentally, it worked, but I did not know what I did. Fortunately, it was DOA, so I returned it the next day. Before that, I had a Whirlpool microwave for years, and I loved it, but their user interface, obviously, had changed dramatically for the worse.

This model Toshiba, ML-EM45P(BS) also has a terrific feature called Position Memory that after it cooks, it continues turning the glass turntable until it’s back to the original position when the cooking began. That’s so, so convenient and much safer. According to Google AI, only Toshiba and COMFEE have that feature. I never thought about having such a feature even after for years having to often reach back and rotate the hot dish first, so the handle faces frontward, and then carry it across the turntable.

Its sensor mode also cooks from frozen or fresh food, and it’s simple to use. And the now Mandatory Two-step Door Lock is also much more convenient than the button lock other brands use (like Whirlpool’s that can be disabled, presumably if you don’t have kids at home). The Toshiba has a trigger at the inside top of the handle so you can open the door with one hand and does not require disabling to make it convenient.

Seems to work well when we tested it. This is replacing our old one that we had for a good amount of time. Fits well on our countertop. Has turntable, Does come with instruction book.

I purchased this different brand of microwave due to my old Sharp microwave having issues tripping my circuits after just having it for 6 years. My GE before the Sharp I had for 30 years. The Toshiba is a little smaller than my last one which I needed due to not being able to lift those heavy 48lb microwaves. It is plenty big enough for my needs. It is powerful, has several auto choices and heats up well. It is quieter than my last one. It's a good price for this item. It came earlier than expected and in good shape. Love the color. Thank you

As advertised, This is replacing an 11 year old Emerson Unit that finally quit. The unit did alot of cooking and heating up things over the years so I hope that this Toshiba holds up just as well. The Toshiba is extremely quite which is a plus as my old unit was loud. The few things I've heated up so far in the Toshiba came out well heated throughout. The latch on the door that locks it and you have to push up on the latch before opening the door will take some getting used to as my old unit didn't have that, you just opened it that was it. Not really a fan of all these safety features that are being installed on newer stuff nowadays but its our new reality in the 21st century. Anyway I highly recommend this unit. BTW its light as a feather compared to older units so it makes me wonder why such a high price if there is cheaper material in them.

The Toshiba apartment-size microwave is a perfect compact powerhouse! 🍽️ It fits beautifully in smaller spaces without sacrificing performance. I bought this microwave almost 6 months ago, and my family and I love it. It heats so evenly and reliably, is ridiculously simple to use, and has a lot of space inside for large dishes. Also, we love that the finish beep is way less annoying than other microwaves, AND it can be muted altogether if you still just don’t want to wake anyone up while you’re midnight snacking. This relatively inexpensive microwave was bought to replace a much more expensive microwave that, honestly, didn’t perform as well (and died way too soon). I read a lot of reviews on both Amazon and websites that tested it against other microwaves before I was comfortable picking this one. I was honestly surprised at how much Toshiba, of all brands, came out in the lead when it came to microwaves. So, I took a chance and made this purchase with my fingers crossed. My kids and husband actually laughed when this showed up, and there were a lot of South Park Toshiba Handybook references (IYKYK). We even dubbed the new microwave the “Toshiba Handybox.” All laughs aside, the “Toshiba Handybox” is out here killing’ it. This is easily the best microwave we’ve bought, especially for the price. If you’re microwave shopping right now, stop worrying and add this to your cart. You’ll love it.

This is my first Toshiba microwave. It is working well for us, with faster heating than expected for 1,000 watts. The slightly gray interior is very attractive and easy on the eyes. The size is ample for our needs. The child safety latch is easy to operate. A thorough instruction manual is provided and most of the operation is intuitive. The automatic re-heat function heats food hotter than we prefer, but that is the same as every other microwave we've owned, so we just re-heat with manual settings. Overall, I'm impressed with the quality and functionality of this oven.

    Wow - I'm impressed.
Some background so you know we're I'm coming from: Our Tappen digital microwave from 1993 finally died - if only all my appliances had this sort of life! It was a 1000 watts with a turntable, but nothing fancy beyond that. For 32 years it served us well but one of the high-powered diodes died. Time to replace it.

We didn't want a convection oven microwave combo, we already have a great convection oven. But I did want a microwave that used Inverter technology and had a few additional sensors. For me, it came down to a Panasonic or the Toshiba. They had nearly identical features, stats, and comparable dimensions. The deciding factor was the door handle - we wanted a door with a real handle, not one of the "push-button, pop open" doors. The Toshiba fit all criteria.

The model we chose was the Toshiba ML-EM45PIT In black stainless trim. 1250 watts, inverter technology, temperature AND humidity sensors and several built-in cooking algorithms. This thing is practically silent. The first time we fired it up with a mug of water we both worried that we'd received a defective unit. But, in 20 seconds we had a steaming mug of water. It worked.

Our second test was a medium-sized potato. For this I just pierced the skin a few times, placed it on a small ceramic plate and simply pressed the "potato" button. It didn't ask the size, it just put some numbers on the screen and the moisture sensor indicator lit up. In four minutes that oven stopped, I left the potato alone in the oven for another minute with the microwave off, then took it out. It was as close to great as I've ever seen from a microwave. No burning, perfectly cooked with only one tiny dry area. 9 out of 10 - I pressed one button and the microwave did the rest; the result was good.

Next up was microwave popcorn. We don't eat it much, but I was in an experimenting mood. The oven has a popcorn button, you press it once for 1.75 oz size, twice for 3.0 oz size, and a third time for a larger size that I don't remember. Of course, ours was 2.5 oz and didn't fit any of those choices. So I selected the 3.0 oz size and figured I'd stop the oven when the popping stops. That ended up being 2 minutes - the popcorn was perfect with only 3 unpopped kernels and no burning whatsoever. I was impressed. 7 out of 10, nice job - but I did have to stop it myself.

My last experiment was reheating a plate of food - leftovers. The big size comes into it's own here; it easily fits a large dinner plate. The oven has a sensor-driven "reheat" button that uses a temperature sensor to automatically adjust the cooktime and power. The manual says not to open the oven part way or it will throw off the temperature sensor ...so I didn't. I just let the oven do it's thing. The plate came out pretty good, all of the food was reheated, even without stirring or futzing - though some parts were not as hot as I would have liked. Another 10 seconds on high fixed that problem. 8 out of 10, the automatic setting was impressive, but I like my food very hot.

Overall I'm impressed. The intelligent features and sensors are very nice and do a fairly good job - but they are not perfect. The inverter claims to be more even heat, that seems to be the case - but remember, my point of reference was a 32-year-old microwave. Still, it does appear to cook evenly. Appearance is subjective but I like the dark stainless. The real door handle is a winner for me... I hate those push-button doors. It's powerful! that 1250 watts shines when you want to heat water in very little time. Operationally - the thing is practically silent. Normally you hear fans, or a motor turning the turntable, but you really have to strain to hear those things with this Toshiba. Honestly, it's the biggest talking point in my house is how nearly silent it is. I guess our life just isn't that interesting! Recommend the Toshiba, and I do recommend the inverter technology. I can see a difference.

Really like this microwave and definitely recommend it.
I read reviews about the child safety door, etc. I don't know why this is an issue, I didn't even see a need to unlock it.
Having to do an extra step to do something like 1 minute to 1.5 minutes. True, a simple press time cook and enter the time. Really?
The price, quality, no cooking issues, all good, for this old woman.
For me, all is fine. Especially the two concerns for me. Removing the beeps and the 30 sec start button.
    One issue.
The flood light on the unit!
    I mean stadium flood light.
I leave the corner plastic piece on it.
    Maybe that's what it's for. ;)

Only learning curve is the handle to open has a trigger-type latch release ( you can NOT just pull it open ). Not a bad feature just takes time to get used to. This microwave is wonderfully quiet! And heats very well too! Does a really great efficient job at liquids and reheating plates so far. My old huge Sharp Carousel was SO loud with a beep that I’m sure my neighbors heard, and it didn’t heat nearly as well as this smaller Toshiba that costs about 1/3 the price!
It is perfect for my needs. Fits a large plate, and is just enough room without being a hulking beast in the kitchen. I personally LOVE the ability to turn off all beeps (and it’s very easy to turn on and off at will). My old hulking beast of a microwave’s beeps echoed throughout the kitchen and its door was so dang loud, which gives sweat-inducing anxiety when you just put your kid down to nap but desperately need one more cup of coffee, or to finish your breakfast finally at 1 pm.
Another plus, besides safety, for the child lock handle… It’s an easy off button that is a soft click, if you wanna quickly pause the reheating but keep things inside for a bit. Of course the cancel button works well for this too, lol, just sometimes you want a big button. You are able to open and close the door rather quietly too, if you take it slow.
PRO-TIP: If you hear a slight rattle while the plate rotates, it’s likely that your microwave is not fully on even territory. It can be subtle! Mine was rattling slightly, and I worried it was some loose, tiny piece inside the microwave since I bought mine used but in “Excellent” condition.. It had come brand new and perfect looking in a box that had slightly dented packing styrofoam, so I worried it had taken a fall and something was loose. Not the case! I called customer service easily, and they were super helpful. I pressed down on each corner and realized although it looked like it was fully touching the top of the fridge, it wasn’t — hence the rattle! I slid a small towel underneath one corner, and voila, rattle gone!
    Great purchase!

After 5 years, 1 month, and 3 weeks of daily use, our favorite kitchen appliance has bit the dust. After we stopped crying and said thank you to our dear friend for its years of service, we searched our Amazon purchase history and were elated to see this microwave is still available for purchase. It will be a long two days without it, but we're excited to welcome Toshi Junior to the family.

Why are we repurchasing this Toshiba countertop microwave? Until today, it worked perfectly every time, heating food evenly and maintaining its power over the years. It's a nice size. I would consider this full sized (I've never not been able to fit something in it), but it's compact enough to fit on a shelf in our pantry. It's simple to use, the buttons make sense. The glass turntable is nice and easy to clean. The interior never stained even with a certain family member never covering their dish and splattering sauces everywhere on a regular basis. And it's a great value.

    Highly recommend.

Update: The new microwave arrived. I literally clicked "purchase again" from my order history, so we expected to receive the same product. It's slightly different. A little smaller. The handle operates differently (you can't just pull the door open anymore) and the add 30 seconds button doesn't work the same as on the older model. We find this irritating, but if you're not used to the old function, you might not find the new limitation annoying. We still endorse this microwave. It's a good value and it works well. Hopefully this one lasts at least 5 years like the last one did.

This oven checks ALL of (at least my) microwave wanted-feature boxes.

I bought this Toshiba to replace a Panasonic oven that developed an unrepairable fault in its membrane-switch control panel. (You can't avoid membrane switches, unfortunately. They're universal in almost everything at this point. Microwave ovens, stovetops, refrigerators, you name it. They're all membrane switches unless you can afford semi-pro level gear.) I chose Panasonic at the time because I wanted inverter power control, and only Panasonic had it then.

Since then, apparently Panasonic's inverter patents have expired. And that is why I was able to find this Toshiba oven, which, while a very little smaller than the one it replaces. hits ALL THREE of my top three most-wanted microwave features:

    — It has inverter power control instead of just duty-cycling the magnetron to PRETEND to be able to vary its power.

    — It has moisture-sensor smart cooking and reheating so that you don't HAVE to know how long to cook something for.

    — And it has AN ACTUAL DOOR HANDLE instead of an unreliable push-button to open the door.

I HATE those pushbuttons. They invariably start sticking after a while, and then opening the door becomes a two-hand task, because you need one hand to push the stupid button and one to pull the door open. With the Toshiba, opening the door takes one hand, EVERY time. It's easy, positive, and certain. No more hammering (and swearing) at the button.

As a BONUS, the pre-programmed feature that we most commonly used on the old oven, after sensor reheat — sensor-cooking frozen vegetables — is right on the front panel, so now it's two button presses (FRZ VEG, START) instead of eleven. Also, it's extremely quiet.

The one minor complaints I have about this Toshiba oven is that it takes a little while to master the feel of its membrane-switch front panel. But face it, you're never going to find a microwave oven that doesn't have membrane-switch controls, unless you buy a commercial-kitchen model that just has two knobs and no fancy features at all.

This is about as close as you're ever likely to find to the perfect microwave oven. I salute you, Toshiba.

    IMPORTANT UPDATE:

Pray that you never have a problem with it, because Toshiba outsources their customer service to an outfit called NIDEA. If Nidea decides that your problem requires a return or refund to resolve it, they will send you a document containing instructions for finding and printing your Amazon full invoice via steps that DO NOT EXIST, because their document is YEARS out of date and neither amazon.com, nor the Amazon mobile app, nor the Amazon order confirmation email, looks like that any more. You won't be able to convince them of this. They won't understand. They'll just keep sending you the same instructions that you cannot follow because the links and menus that they tell you to follow physically do not exist.

The microwave is nice and large. It works like a champ for all things microwavy. There was a surprising claim and a dedicated button on the control panel that says "Frozen Pizza" and the manual even shows to place the frozen pizza directly on the glass turntable, up to 16 inches. Knowing what I do of physics, my doubt meter was clicking.

I got a frozen pizza. I placed it as suggested and used the Frozen Pizza option, which displayed the Sensor Cooking feature as well was activated. This is the ONLY feature that fails. The toppings were cooked perfectly. The crust? A floppy flimsy uncooked mess that wanted to roll up like a cheap newspaper.

Everything works as suggested except for that ONE thing, the frozen pizza button is a bust. Do not use that button with a real live frozen pizza unless you are intending to make a mess. That is why it earned 3 stars instead of 5. It got my pizza loving hopes up, and it murdered a perfectly innocent pizza in a most terrible manner.

Veggies, taters, everything else, popcorn buttons and their bag sizes. all worked flawlessly. Like stated, if it's for the microwave, you're good. RIP frozen pizzas. It was a nice idea, but dough doesn't cook right in the microwave particles.

    *Upon Edit on 9/29/25*

Nearly a year later, a few things dawned on me that told me to come here and re-do my 3 star to a well deserved 5 star review and here is why!

First and foremost, the frozen pizza issue. I mistook the concept for an 'unbaked' frozen pizza. This is not the frozen pizza they were talking about. It's about an already cooked frozen pizza from the freezer, saved from a previous meal. The baked dough is defrosted but the toppings get the cook up and is done perfectly. Why this matters? Regular microwaves tend to keep cooking already baked frozen bread, and makes it rock hard. We know how microwaves do this to bread products. Reheat a cold muffin, the moment it cools off to being edible, it hardens into a hockey puck. This microwave will not do that.

Second thing I noticed and it took a bit. The turntable sensor technology is truly OUTSTANDING! How so? Put a bowl, plate or cup on the turntable that is not perfectly centered. It turns while cooking or reheating, no matter the setting, when the timer finishes, the turntable keeps going until the food is at its closest to the front door so it's easier to remove. That is truly awesome! As I am in a wheelchair, not having to lean forward an inch more to reach the heated plate/bowl/cup because it is right there in the front and closest to you is a thing of true dedication to service! NICE WORK, TOSHIBA!

So from 3 to 5 stars and it's well earned. I love this microwave and if you do not buy it, you are missing out! Worth every penny I spent!

Got the 1.6 Cu.Ft version. I've read some other reviews that said the clock/timer display was hard to see, ours was very easy to see.

There was one review that said the touch buttons were black on black, that's not true as they are a sort of silver'ish grey (like an aluminum color) on black and are easy to see if you are looking straight at them in a well lighted room. When you touch a button the actual touch point is very slightly up and to the left and not in the center of the button where its more intuitive to press. Plus it would be better if the silver'ish grey was white and not silver'ish grey, the 'wording/writing/numbers' for the buttons would stand out better if they were white.

So my first suggestion for improvement is that the button press spot be in the center of the button where its more intuitive. However, this being said, its ok after you get used to it but I noticed my senior aged next door neighbor who came over to visit to look at the microwave because she wants to buy a new one, she tried to use it and it wasn't very intuitive for her slightly shaky hands not having a definite intuitive point to aim for.

My second suggestion for improvement is that It would be nice if the controls panel buttons were lit. As it is right now even though the control button locations are visible in a well lighted room looking straight at them, in a more dimly lit room or are looking at them off axis (not straight on) they are not as easy to see to older eyes even though still visible if you look more closely and directly at them. Lighting them would help.

Contrary to that implied/stated by the advertisement there is not a "one touch popcorn button as kitchen essential". To do popcorn without doing a timed cook by entering the cook time manually you use the 'Custom Cook' functions (page EN-25 - EN-26 in my manual in English). The one for popcorn is CC-6, you press the 'Auto Cook' button 6 times. But there is a problem with CC-6, and that is if you look at the manual you will see CC-6 is set up for 3.5 ounces of popcorn and this means if you use the 'mini bags' of popcorn which are about 1.5 ounces and use CC-6 that your popcorn is going to overcook and burn. For the 1.5 ounce 'mini bags' the cook time is 1 minute and 10 seconds and you need to set this manually and can't use a 'Custom Cook' function. I can't find a way to 'program' the 'Custom Cook' settings, and although I have not tried each of these settings with the items shown in the manual (or a comparable weight/portion of something else) to that shown, I suspect that anything outside of that manual listed 'weight/portion' would either over cook or under cook if a 'Custom Cook' setting was used. So my third suggestion for improvement is to allow a user defined 'Custom Cook' function to be programmed in and saved for recall later.

Yes, I realize this thing costs ~150.00 + tax... so I don't expect 'super duper luxury' type improvements, and these suggestions I know would be ignored and maybe they could be viewed as sort of nit-pickey in some ways. But if you want a decent microwave this one works well and works as advertised except for that advertised "one touch popcorn button as kitchen essential" thing which does not exist.

My Sharp Carousel MIcrowave Oven just died, so went shopping online for another microwave oven. So many choices, but I needed one that fits my cabinet and with 1200W. So I narrowed it down to a few and found this one on Amazon. It was at a very good price, size and power, but this Toshiba model had mixed reviews. So, I am writing my reviews to address the points from other owners of this microwave oven.

First, some owners had a difficult time setting the clock. I read the instructions, and it was pretty intuitive and I was able to set the clock time with ease. As for the control panel not well lit, I can see when my kitchen lights were dimmed or shut, it was a bit difficult to see (not back lit) but with normal lights on, control panel was easy to see. You can see the picture that you can clearly see the control panel.

The noise level is quieter than my Sharp Carousel model, so I give it thumbs up. Yes, you do hear the humming of a microwave oven, but it is low level and I think it is expected. As for ease of use, yes the bottom two icons can be confusing at first, but once you read the manual (I wonder if owners read the manual before they start complaining about how difficult it is to use) and follow the instructions, and get used to the control panel, it turns out that it is easy to use.

I am very pleased with the popcorn option. My Sharp Carousel had a difficult time popping popcorn without burning 10% of the popcorn. Or when I tried to time it to not burn, there were quite a few kernels not popped. This Toshiba to my surprise at it at 1:45 minutes for 3.5 oz bag and it popped 99% if not 100% of the kernels and not of them were burnt. That is enough for me to buy this model.

This is only my first day of unpacking, setting it up and using it to heat some water for tea and pop one bag of pop corn, but so for I really like my investment in this microwave oven. I will continue to use it and if I have any issues or praises in the coming weeks, I will certainly write a more complete review.

So far, it is 5 stars for me ... and it only costed me $169.99. That is a good price and it is sizeable for a family of 5.

Now, with more usage, (updated review - part 2) I used the reheat feature and I was half expecting to set the time, but it did not require setting the time. I then patiently waited for it to reheat my dinner from the night before with its smart sensor feature. When it was done, it then went into the mode of returning the plate to its original position (which was not necessary because it was a circular plate), but the dinner was heated evenly. Another plus. And the noise level was low. So far, so good.

Allow me to paint you a story of our time before this microwave.
My husband and I have gone through exactly 2 microwaves in our 11 year relationship before landing on this one. Our first was a tiny thing made in 2004 that could barely manage cup o' noodle. It finally died sounding like the cries of a thousand whales back in late 2017. It had a good long life of burnt popcorn and cold reheated food.

We went without a microwave because we were dirt broke at the time from finally becoming homeowners (oof our savings), and then my in-laws graced us with their microwave that *they* had gotten as a wedding gift in Canada in.. 1988. I used to say that the microwave was almost as old as I was until we found the manufacturing date was April 1988. Dang, the microwave was now officially one month older than me. Still had to deal with uneven cooking, burnt popcorn or half popped bags, and a defrost function that only seemed to work half the time and literally cook the food the other half. This beast of a microwave is an enigma in the fact that it has somehow survived all these years without even needing anything replaced. Honestly the microwave still "works". I can relate heavily to this microwave.

After the last few years of me completely swearing off of trying to make microwave popcorn, my husband complaining about even more burnt popcorn and unpopped kernels at the same time, I finally asked if we could manage to scrape some money together to get an actual working microwave. After much debating, I was tasked with researching a good microwave that was big enough and mostly inexpensive enough. I had heard a bit about this microwave and a few others and ultimately decided on this one. The price was right, the size was perfect, the functionality was great, being able to turn off literally all the beeping was fantastic. Unfortunately the first one we got was mostly DOA and it was really disappointing, especially since I had to move a microwave that I'm sure weighed about 50lbs, I wish I was joking. Amazon took care of the return and replacement real easy and quick, and the new-new microwave came today.

The first test was popcorn. Oh boy. Since everyone says "don't use the popcorn button", I definitely didn't. Unfortunately the microwave did burn the bag of popcorn at full power. So, I decided to actually use the popcorn button. I hit the popcorn button twice (setting for a 3oz bag) just to make sure it would have enough time to heat up and pop. Oh boy. I was not prepared for what happened. The popcorn actually popped! And it only took maybe a minute and a half! No burnt popcorn *and* most of the kernels were popped. Our toddler rejoiced that mommy had actually popped a bag of popcorn, "Yay! You did it mommy!"

Second, I defrosted a 1lb package of frozen ground beef. Woo, that was a breeze. Set the defrost for the weight and let it go, though it did warm the edges a bit too much but it was quick and didn't cook it like our last microwaves.

Third and most terrifying. Before this microwave, I had gotten used to putting a mug of coffee/tea/water/whatever to heat/reheat for a minute or more and it not even being hot-hot. I stuck a mug of water (with a few tapioca pearls in it) in the microwave to test and set it for one minute, after a short time I glanced into the microwave and discovered it was actually boiling. A very loud proclamation of "Oh my god!" rang from myself in the kitchen. I promptly called my husband over to also observe what the mug of water was doing. He also loudly proclaimed "Oh my god!"

In short: I can't believe what I used to consider "normal" for a microwave. This one is more than leaps and bounds better than what we "had to just deal with" in a time of penny pinching and saving money. We're finally mostly comfortable and were in desperate need of a good quality microwave.

In very short: I love this microwave.

[UPDATE at end] I've owned many microwaves, was the first person I know to buy one, in 1974. People use to come over to try it, a modern marvel. And wonder of wonders, this is the only other microwave since that original one (a Gaffers and Sattler) that explains in the manual how to make creative use of aluminum foil in the microwave! I didn't know you could still do that. The purchase was worth it for that knowledge alone (I was an old hand at using foil- on the wings of chickens, with rolls, bread, things that cook too quickly compared to other parts of the meal). No scrimping on the packaging- it arrived in a heavy-weight box within a box and encased in styrofoam, so no chance of dents or damage, yet easy to unpack.

Aesthetically I LOVE this. I fancy it has a chunky retro mid-century look to it, like what a food replicator looked like on the original Enterprise. I don't have the best eyesight and the buttons are big and clearly labeled- can see them without my glasses. Ditto with the digital display, bright green; the light inside is bright too. The handle is thick and solid in your hand, pleases me every time I use it (haven't had a microwave in years with an actual handle, SO much better, feels decisive, purposeful, kinesthetically pleasing). The operation is intuitive (for the most part) and basic, well-thought-out, satisfying. I'm coming from a fancy Panasonic unit with inverter technology that I was in love with, but as is apparently common with Panasonic microwaves it died after a few months. It's a trade-off- I much prefer the look and operation of this (for example, the Panasonic had no number pad) but it takes slightly longer to cook, but that's okay.

Being able to turn the sound off is a blessing. I'm living in my vintage travel trailer at the moment and have two little finches that don't need to be awakened at all hours (they answer the beeps with chirps). Relatedly the door makes a rather loud but not unpleasant thunk when closed normally, but it can also be closed gently, more quietly when desired- after a week it's already second nature to me. The microwave when running is quieter than most. Also wanted to say I nearly sent this back because the power level button didn't work. What an idiot- when all else fails read the manual. You change the power level AFTER you enter the cooking time.

So far I love this thing, and like the many other Toshiba products I've owned over the years, hope it lasts a good long time. (After my experience with the short-lived Panasonic I got the three-year warranty- a bargain at $6.) But if it dies or malfunctions I'll update this review. Thank-you Toshiba!

UPDATE: I had a senior moment and forgot to put the frozen lasagna in the microwave. I manually set it for seven minutes and pressed start. I was doing other things in the kitchen and about five minutes in the microwave went dead. No display, no power, nothing. It was HOT inside. Oh great, I blew a fuse or WORSE, I thought. I couldn't find the owner's manual. I tried unplugging it, plugging it back in, nothing. No re-set button on the back. SO disgusted with myself. Thought I was going to have to have it serviced or replaced. About 15 minutes later it came back to life, after it cooled off, good as new. Thank-you Toshiba!!
